About
My name is Kate Gardner, I live in Bristol, UK, with the lovely talkie_tim and I like to read.
Actually, that’s a bit of an understatement. For a rant about much I love to read, go here.
Not that I will read just anything. There are too many books out there for me to plough through all the rubbish. I do some research beforehand, have a long list of preferred authors and accept recommendations from discerning friends. This may mean that there are more positive reviews than negative.
I hope that the reviews I post here will help you to choose your next book, or maybe just provide a forum for discussion. I will try not to give away books’ endings or major plot twists, but I will discuss plot in general. As a rule I’d recommend you only read the first paragraph of each review if you’re the kind of person who prefers not to know any of the plot before starting a book.
I have also written about books and theatre for For Books’ Sake, Shiny New Books, Redhead Reads and Theatre Bristol Writers.
Any text links you see are genuine hopefully helpful links, not advertising.
Publishers – please contact me before sending advance review copies.
I welcome feedback, either in the comments or via e-mail (kate [at] noseinabook.co.uk).

Hi,
Check out the opening chapters to my debut, Eyeball Computer, published by Leveller’s Press on, disneyatemydaughter.com: a ‘sharp nightmare-like arrow fired at the alienation we feel from our children as we witness the increasingly pressing demands power and society makes upon them. This story is about a woman’s fight to retrieve a child from the orderly abyss the future threatens to become.’
Hope you like it…
Hannah
Hi Kate,
My name is Raina, I’m a theatre maker in Bristol, UK. I’ve just returned from Edinburgh Fringe with my solo show MANIC which is a puppetry/poetry/theatre show about bad sex and consent.
I am currently preparing for a Spring 2023 tour of the show but am looking for reviewers who may be interested in reviewing one of our early performances prior to the tour. As an international artist working towards a creative arts visa, reviews are really important for my application. I’m aware you’ve reviewed theatre in the past and as the show originated as a spoken word set I thought it may be up your alley.
We have a free show at Bath Spa University Newton Park, 5pm on October 7th. Tickets are available here: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/bathspalive/t-ojjxknj
Below is some info about the show:
Winner of Best Solo Show at FUSE International 2022
When Raina arrives to perform at her spoken word event to see her exes in the audience, all the questions she’s had about her past sexual experiences begin to surface. Through her poetry, she begins to explore questions about bad sex, drunk sex, and the grey areas of consent. MANIC is a solo show that combines spoken word, puppetry, and theatre to ask whether it is possible to say you were violated without implicating a partner.
Here’s what audiences have to say about MANIC:
‘Flows effortlessly between good humour and emotionally challenging scenes which left a lot to think about. ‘
‘An important piece of work that takes you through a roller coaster of emotions. Empowering, self-aware, comedic and serious – this performance has everything!’
‘Many, myself included lack both the language and the patience to articulate the complex realities of sex, consent & abuse of power. Raina does not – to call her a poet is a disservice to the fully formed performer that takes the stage.’
Hope to see you there!
Kind regards,
Raina Greifer
