Holiday in Berlin
Berlin is cool. This is my conclusion after spending a week there. It’s not the prettiest city but it is always interesting. We explored pretty widely thanks to a combination of flea markets and the start of the European Month of Photography, which Berlin’s galleries threw open their doors for.
We tried to explore a little off the beaten track but we also hit the big sights: Checkpoint Charlie (heaving with tourists – the only place that was quite that thick with them), the Reichstag, Tiergarten, TV Tower, Brandenburg Gate.
We also did a David Bowie walking tour and hit some great bookshops. More on that later.
its a city thats changed so much since the wall came down. I went there for New Years Eve that year and east Berlin was such a contrast to West berlin. Today its hard to see where one ends and the other begins
And yet in some parts of the city the East–West difference is still huge, and in some places the scar of the wall is still so present. It’ll be interesting to go back in another 27 years and see if it has homogenised more.
