48-hour TBR read-a-thon – the plan
Wallace of Unputdownables has challenged her readers to join her for a 48-hour TBR read-a-thon this weekend. Because clearly I have nothing else I should be getting on with (like decorating or building bookcases) I have decided to join in.
(I know, I know, I am all about the challenges lately, which is a little unlike me. Thing is, I’ve been struggling a little to read much but these mini challenges from wonderful fellow book bloggers have helped me enormously, so thank you to everyone who takes the trouble to run these things.)
Anyway, the point of this particular challenge is to make a dent in the TBR, which in my case is more than 130 books. That’s a lorra lot. We’re supposed to pick out a few that we intend to read, but I’m a bit lost as to where to start so I thought I’d ask for recommendations. My TBR is here. Please do take a look then come back and tell me what you both recommend and think I stand a chance of getting through in a weekend.
I was thinking of queueing up Half of a Yellow Sun, Slaughterhouse 5 and the Southland Tales books. Any advances on that?
130! Phwoar! Mind you, mine is probably just as massive but I just haven’t counted it. The only recommendation I’d make (cos the line up you have sounds great) is Saturday by Ian McEwan. I loved this book. Enough to read it twice, profile it for BookDrum and include it in my thesis. I really liked it that much – so would like to know what you think of it.
I’d put Slaughterhouse 5 at the top of that list. My TBR list contains a lot of the same things as yours. The only other one on your list that I have read is Naked Lunch, but I wouldn’t say that was essential.
Double Fault by Lionel Shriver and Requiem For A Dream? Either / or I guess. Hubert Selby Jr wrote ‘Last Exit To Brooklyn’ as well. Good luck with the Readathon!
Kath That’s a serious recommendation there! Saturday is definitely added to the list!
gusset I’m definitely going to try Slaughterhouse 5 but a friend warned yesterday that’s tough going…
Joanna I’m happy to add the Shriver book to my attempt but not so sure about Requiem for a Dream. I’ve tried it before and found it very hard to get on with. I liked Last Exit to Brooklyn but that wasn’t exactly an easy read either. Not that I’m only after easy reads, of course.
